Each year since 2010, my friend, Paul Chan, has completed a 50-mile South Rim to North Rim to South Rim trek in the Grand Canyon within a 24-hour period to raise awareness about global hunger and to walk in solidarity with those who are less fortunate than we. This hike is a spectacular meditation of how we, as individuals, can mobilize support for creative and sustainable solutions to hunger throughout the world. In total, we ascend nearly 11,000 feet in elevation during the 2 climbs.
Last year, I joined Paul for the first time and I am returning this year. In fact, one of our hospital's heart transplant patients is joining us this year, and we are thrilled to have Nate on board. Why am I returning to hike this year?
The money we raise goes to CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty), which is run by Church World Service and has programs in over 20 countries throughout the world. With a vision that hunger assistance should go beyond just a hand-out, the funds we raise support potable water projects, which reduce diarrheal infections, free up girls to go to school and allow women to pursue other economic projects for income generation (see: youtube.com/watch?v=AcDPzQeLLlk). The funds also support latrines and public hygiene initiatives to reduce rates of severe diarrhea, which remains the number 2 killer of children under 5 years of age worldwide. We support income-generating micro-business projects, empowering poor people with greater access to disposable income. And finally, the funds focus on food security for hungry people throughout the world, ensuring that all people have access to calories, protein, and micronutrients (see: youtube.com/watch?v=kVhbEyrCvI8). A summary of key global development programs in CROP can be found at: cwsglobal.org/our-work/global-development.
Over the past 9 years, this unique Grand Canyon walk has raised $715,000+ from over 900 individuals throughout the country. THIS YEAR, as it is the 10th year, we will do the entire 50 miles over 2 days, allowing our hikers to stay overnight at the North Rim for the very first time. Therefore, over the 2 days of the hike this year, we will keep you posted on our progress with our GPS tracker and email updates, in the hopes of building a community of people passionate about responding to hunger in a sustainable and empowering way. Our goal this year is ambitious, — we hope to raise at least $120,000. To start us off, 6 donors have committed $32,500 as a Matching Fund, matching dollar for dollar your donations thus giving your donations even more impact.
Please help us and this cause by supporting our efforts. We have walked this past decade together in this Grand effort to give voice to those who often have no voice in our society. Many are hidden from our daily lives, but we can choose to make their challenges our challenges as we share some of the good fortune and blessings we have had. As always, we are deeply appreciative of anything you can give to our efforts
So, please join with us in the fight against poverty and hunger. Simply click on the "Donate" button on the right side of this web page, and you will be on your way to helping us reach our goals!!
With deep gratitude for your generous support,
