7 Years of Walking In Solidarity through our Grand Canyon Walk

Grand Canyon Walkers

Dear Friend,

For the past 6 years, we have undertaken an annual Rim-To-Rim-To Rim 50-mile trek each October in the Grand Canyon within a 24-hour period. Many of you have so kindly supported us in our charitable Hike for Hunger. To date, we have raised a total of $381,971! My fellow walkers and I could not have done any of this without your generosity.

And your support has made an important difference. The money you have helped us raise these past 6 years has helped feed thousands, both in the U.S. and throughout the world, and to support sustainable long-term solutions to hunger, disease, and poverty. These sustainable projects have included water projects, latrines, training of indigenous health workers and other health programs, seeds and fertilizers to improve crop yields, microcredit loans, and even built schools. And your funds have provided immediate assistance to refugees fleeing wars in their own countries. See the organization's link about where the money has gone: cwsglobal.org/our-work

Our 50-mile Rim to Rim to Rim Grand Canyon trek, encompassing 50 miles and 22,000 feet in elevation change (half up and half down)will occur once again on October 29. This year, there are 8 other hikers who will join me for at least part of the hike (including 2 high school seniors from Kansas City). Paul Lattan, Steve Berne, Tom McCurry, and I will go alone for the first 40 of 50 miles (traveling from the South Rim to the Canyon bottom and on to the North Rim; whereupon we will re-trace our steps back down to the bottom of the Canyon) starting at 3 a.m. in the dark of night with only a headlamp to guide our rapid descent. The other hikers will start later at 8 a.m. down 10 miles to the Canyon bottom (with an additional 3-mile side trip) and wait for us to re-descend from the North Rim, whereupon we will all climb out the last 10 miles back up 4,800 feet in elevation to the South Rim by 3 a.m (within 24 hours of starting).

Our goal this year is ambitious — we plan to raise at least $100,000 again. And if we raise $118,031, which will bring us to $500,000 raised over the past 7 years, I will shave my head. To start us off, 5 donors have committed $25,000 as a Matching Fund, matching dollar for dollar your donations thus giving your donations even more impact.

Please help us and this cause by supporting our efforts. Twenty-five percent of the money stays locally, going to programs in the Kansas City area, and the remaining 75% funds more sustainable solutions to hunger and health in developing nations. We have walked more than a half decade together in this Grand effort to give voice to those who often have no voice in our society. Many are hidden from our daily lives, but we can choose to make their challenges our challenges as we share some of the good fortune and blessings we have had. As always, we are deeply appreciative of anything you can give to our efforts, and do feel free to share this email to friends and family.

So, please join with us in the fight against poverty and hunger. Simply click on the "Donate" button on the right side of this web page, and you will be on your way to helping us reach our goals!! And feel free to check out the links below, which provides more information on how this organization's water projects transform lives.

With deepest gratitude for your generous support,
