Walking in the Grand Canyon to Support Sustainable Solutions to Hunger

Johan And Peter Suyderhoud

This year's Grand Canyon Walk Date is November 7

To Our Family and Friends,

Each year since 2010, Johan’s friend and colleague at Saint Luke’s, Paul Chan, takes a group that completes a 23- or 50-mile trek going in the Grand Canyon within a 24-hour period to raise awareness about global hunger and to walk in solidarity with those who are less fortunate than we, and to raise funds to help support this mission. The hike is a spectacular meditation of how we, as individuals, can mobilize support for creative and sustainable solutions to hunger throughout the world. This year, my son Peter and I will join Paul and his group in this effort. As you can imagine, the need has never been greater than during this year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The money we raise goes to CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty), which is run by Church World Service and has programs in over 20 countries throughout the world. With a vision that hunger assistance should go beyond just a hand-out, the funds we raise support potable water projects, which reduce diarrheal infections, free up girls to go to school and allow women to pursue other economic projects for income generation (see: youtube.com/watch?v=AcDPzQeLLlk). The funds also support latrines and public hygiene initiatives to reduce rates of severe diarrhea, which remains the number 2 killer of children under 5 years of age worldwide. We support income-generating micro-business projects, empowering poor people with greater access to disposable income. And finally, the funds focus on food security for hungry people throughout the world, ensuring that all people have access to calories, protein, and micronutrients (see: youtube.com/watch?v=kVhbEyrCvI8). A summary of key global development programs in CROP can be found at: cwsglobal.org/our-work/global-development.

Over the past 10 years, this unique Grand Canyon walk has raised $839,456 from over 960 individuals throughout the country. THIS YEAR, we re-double and dedicate our efforts to those struggling with hunger and poverty in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal this year is ambitious — we hope to raise at least $120,000 for a third straight year. Peter's and my goal is to raise a minimum of $10000 together toward this goal.

On behalf of Peter and myself, we ask you to please help sponsor us in this cause as we walk together. Kathy has started this pledge drive for both of us, and Johan will as well. Paul’s group has walked this past decade together in a Grand effort to give voice to those who often have no voice in our society. Many are hidden from our daily lives, but we can choose to make their challenges our challenges as we share some of the good fortune and blessings we have been given. As always, we are deeply appreciative and grateful for any amount you are able give to our efforts.

So, please join with us in the fight against poverty and hunger. Simply click on the "Donate" button on the right side of this web page, and you will be on your way to helping us reach our goals!!

With heartfelt thanks for your generous support,
Peter and Johan
