Walking in the Grand Canyon to Support Sustainable Solutions to Hunger

Valerie Rader

This year's Grand Canyon Walk Date is November 7

Dear Friends,

Each year since 2010, my friend, Paul Chan, takes a group that completes a 50-mile trek going Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim in the Grand Canyon within a 24-hour period to raise awareness and funds about global hunger and to walk in solidarity with those who are less fortunate than we. This hike is a spectacular meditation of how we, as individuals, can mobilize support for creative and sustainable solutions to hunger throughout the world. This year, I will join Paul in this effort. As you can imagine, the need is greater than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will be my first year joining this group on the 20-22 mile south rim hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I am excited to support this important effort!

The money we raise goes to CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty), which is run by Church World Service and has programs in over 20 countries throughout the world. With a vision that hunger assistance should go beyond just a hand-out, the funds we raise support potable water projects, which reduce diarrheal infections, free up girls to go to school and allow women to pursue other economic projects for income generation (see: youtube.com/watch?v=AcDPzQeLLlk). The funds also support latrines and public hygiene initiatives to reduce rates of severe diarrhea, which remains the number 2 killer of children under 5 years of age worldwide. We support income-generating micro-business projects, empowering poor people with greater access to disposable income. And finally, the funds focus on food security for hungry people throughout the world, ensuring that all people have access to calories, protein, and micronutrients (see: youtube.com/watch?v=kVhbEyrCvI8). A summary of key global development programs in CROP can be found at: cwsglobal.org/our-work/global-development.

Over the past 10 years, this unique Grand Canyon walk has raised $839,456 from over 960 individuals throughout the country. THIS YEAR, we re-double and dedicate our efforts to those struggling with hunger and poverty in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal this year is ambitious — we hope to raise at least $120,000 for a third straight year. My goal is to raise a minimum of $5000 toward this goal.

Please help us and this cause by supporting our efforts. This group has walked this past decade together in a grand effort to give voice to those who often have no voice in our society. Many are hidden from our daily lives, but we can choose to make their challenges our challenges as we share some of the good fortune and blessings we have. As always, we are deeply appreciative of anything you can give to our efforts

So, please join with us in the fight against poverty and hunger. Simply click on the "Donate" button on the right side of this web page, and you will be on your way to helping us reach our goals!!

With deep gratitude for your generous support,
Valerie
