Join us for the 28th Annual Martha’s Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 14.  The full six-mile walk will begin and end at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven with a half-way stop for refreshments and rest (and possible ending point) at Trinity Methodist Church in the Campgrounds in Oak Bluffs.

This year’s CROP Hunger Walk will be held in memory of Alden Besse, founder and leader of the Martha’s Vineyard hunger walk for 25 years who died on December 13, 2017, two months after our last walk.  In this year’s walk, we will also be honoring Betty Burton for her two decades of leadership in the Vineyard’s efforts to alleviate hunger on the island.  Betty is the president of the Vineyard Committee on Hunger and the chief organizer for VCOH’s monthly Serving Hands and holiday Family to Family food service programs.

We on the Vineyard are continuing to walk each year because so many around the world walk each day simply to get food and water.  Over the course of our first 27 years, the MV CROP Hunger Walks have raised $472,769 to benefit the poor and hungry around the world and the those facing food insecurity on our own island.  This is the effort of hundreds of Vineyarders.  This year, we have the chance to break half a million dollars!  We believe we can make that landmark amount, but we will need your help and participation to do that.

Twenty-five percent of the funds we raise will benefit the Island Food Pantry and the Vineyard Committee on Hunger in their services to the island.  The other funds will be used by Church World Service in the U.S. and globally for emergency food supplies, agricultural training, livestock, wells and pumps, farm seeds and farm equipment.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to this fun, family friendly, and worthwhile activity. During the registration period on the Walk Day, we will remember Alden Besse and honor Betty Burton.  Additionally, there will be educational activities and information for all ages so everyone can learn about the progress being made against hunger.  Follow us on Facebook for updates and information, both about this event and on hunger issues generally.
