Join us for the 29th Annual Martha’s Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 20. The full six-mile walk will begin and end at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven with a half-way stop for refreshments and rest (and possible ending point) at Trinity Methodist Church in the Campgrounds in Oak Bluffs. Walkers may either plan to walk the full route, or plan to finish their walk in Oak Bluffs and take advantage of convenient shuttle service back to Vineyard Haven.

This is the 50th Anniversary of CROP Hunger Walks. Begun in 1969, CROP Hunger Walks are “viewed by many as the granddaddy of charity walks,” noted the LA Times (October 26, 2009). Fifty years ago, CROP Walks were much longer, ten to twelve miles to reflect the distances many people around the world had to walk to supply themselves with food and water. Nowadays, CROP Walks are shorter because with the achievements in the fight against hunger, the distances to water especially are much shorter. We on the Vineyard are continuing to walk each year because so many around the world still must walk each day simply to get food and water, even if they now walk significantly shorter distances.

Over the course of our first 28 years, the MV CROP Hunger Walks have raised $498,643 to benefit the poor and hungry around the world and the those facing food insecurity on our own island. This is the effort of hundreds of Vineyarders. This year we will readily break half a million dollars, but we want to go well beyond that this year. We believe we can do that with your help and participation.

Twenty-five percent of the funds we raise will benefit the Island Food Pantry and the Vineyard Committee on Hunger in their services to the island. The other funds will be used by Church World Service in the U.S. and globally for emergency food supplies, agricultural training, livestock, wells and pumps, farm seeds and farm equipment.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to this fun, family-friendly, and worthwhile activity. If you’ve walked the MV CROP Hunger Walk before, on Walk Day you’ll see we’ve streamlined registration and are offering more educational (and fun!) activities so everyone can learn about the progress being made against hunger. Follow us on Facebook for updates and information, both about this event and on hunger issues generally.

We have walk teams from fourteen different churches and organizations, so it’s easy to join in. Need more information about the MV CROP Hunger Walk? Need walk materials and information for your fundraising efforts? Want to join a team? You also can register online on this website and even fundraise online. Team captains or members of our Organizing Committee can provide what you need.

Together we can help end hunger in our community and around the world!
